For every overhyped, ten million-selling title out there, there are five games worthy of your attention. We take a look at some of the most underhyped, underplayed games to be released this generation.
Earth Defence Force 2017
Giant bugs have invaded the planet and it's up to the Earth Defence Force to save the day! The game's concept is about as cheesy as a... erm... yeah, I can't think of anything cheesier.
Despite the horrible voice-acting, mediocre graphics and hackneyed plot, EDF delivers a ton of fun. A few hundred guns, a completely destructible environment and hordes of enemies are more than enough incentive to give this a go.
What happens when you take what many call a 'kiddies' console and try to dispel that notion? A very gory beat 'em up set in a black and white universe ? Mad World was the antithesis of the Wii.
And it's for that reason that the game didn't get the attention it deserved. Sega has, however, said that they will continue to make mature games for the console.
No More Heroes
The brainchild of gaming guru Suda 51, No More Heroes sees you play as a light-sabre-wielding otaku known as Travis Touchdown (I guess Jonny Bravo was taken already).
Despite the goofy name, the game proved to be loads of fun with... 'unique' (ahem) Wii remote gestures and addictive gameplay. Despite this, sales have been very mixed, especially in Japan. Here's hoping that the Xbox 360 and PS3 ports do well...
House of the Dead: Overkill
What's wrong with you Wii owners?! Put the balance board away and buy some proper games for goodness' sake ? even if the game drops more F-bombs than a terrorist with Tourette syndrome. In fact, this title has the Guinness Record for being 'the most profane game in history'.
First seen in the arcades, Sega's lightgun-toting House of the Dead series made its way onto the Wii and garnered good reviews thanks to the exploitation-movie atmosphere. While the game isn't for everyone, Wii owners tiring of 'cute' titles can do far worse than this.
An excellent strategy RPG, Valkyria Chronicles is one of the aces up the PS3's sleeve thanks to its wartime setting in fictional Europa and awesome graphics.
The cell-shaded visuals and genre might not be up everyone's alley, though there is a sequel in the works ? so do yourself a favour and buy this game.
