It's once again time to take a peek at the world of mobile apps, with some great programs available.
This time, we have Amazing Alex, a word-translation tool and a few more neat applications!
Hiive
The Hiive has become a popular online community for the latest social and club events in South Africa, so it stands to reason that a BlackBerry app was released.
The app lets you search for local events and venues, complete with maps and GPS coordinates. Additionally, you also have the ability to upload media to the service.
The Hiive app is available free of charge for BlackBerry users, with an Android version on the way too.
Nimbuzz
One of the oldest and greatest cross-platform instant messenger clients, Nimbuzz built a big following thanks to its appearance on Symbian, Blackberry, Android and iOS and other platforms.
Now, it makes an appearance on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7, complete with support for Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger and a slew of other protocols.
Word Lens
An iOS exclusive for the longest time, this innovative translation app is well worth a download to your Android device.
The application uses your camera to quickly translate words, for instance, if you see a sign in a foreign language.
Word Lens is free to try out, with an in-app purchase required for additional functionality.
Switcher
This application, still in alpha surprisingly enough, is a unique gesture-based method of task-management.
This Android app lets users use simple swipes to close, minimise and switch between applications, making for a refreshingly different experience.
XBMC
Arguably the foremost solution for media streaming, XBMC has become the service of choice for many video junkies.
Now, the fully fledged service is on its way to Google's platform, being another version early in testing. It's not available from Google's Play store yet, but users can install it from this link.
Amazing Alex
The latest game from Angry Birds developer Rovio Mobile, Amazing Alex is another off-the-wall physics puzzler.
Tasked with getting a ball into a basket, players will need to create bridges, take advantage of the environment and much more.
The game is available for roughly $0.99 on iOS and Android, with Mac, PC and Windows Phone versions set to follow. Users can also download a free version, containing loads of content anyway.
Twidere
Whether it's TweetCaster, Plume or the official app, it's getting harder to stand out with an Android Twitter client these days.
Thankfully, Twidere comes out swinging, with an Android 4.0 inspired look and compatibility with all Android devices down to 1.6.
Twidere is a free download from the Google Play store.
