The official image for Bethesda's 2017 Electronic Entertainment Expo showcase is modeled after a theme park, with six established franchises and two mystery titles shown. ZeniMax has an obvious gap in its late-2017 release calendar, so what could be ready for another major outing?
It's too soon for core entries to either of Bethesda's biggest franchises, so "Fallout 5" and "The Elder Scrolls 6" are off the table, though digital card game "The Elder Scrolls Legends" and multiplayer adventure "The Elder Scrolls Online" are sure to get a mention.
However, stylish and versatile steampunk action title "Dishonored 2" and May's sci-fi thriller "Prey," both from Bethesda sibling Arkane, launched within the last year and are ripe for additional content.
May 2016's furious shooter "Doom" could also benefit from a boost. Along with "Fallout" it has a virtual reality component in development.
Then there's frantic first-person shooter "Quake Champions," a bit more of a niche prospect in mainstream terms, but inching closer to a 2017 bow after a series of public tests.
What of these two mystery titles? As it happens, there are two ZeniMax studios likely to have new games by now.
Tango Gamesworks created 2014's survival horror "The Evil Within," and MachineGames came up with 2014's World War II shooter "Wolfenstein: The New Order" and its 2015 follow-up. The timing's right for one or both to have something lined up for release.
Finally, Bethesda is known to have three secret projects of its own underway.
One is a mobile game that aims to be as "unique" as mobile's "Fallout Shelter" but in a "very different style," executive producer Todd Howard told Glixel in February.
The other two projects are "bigger than anything we've ever done" and "different, but definitely in the same wheelhouse" as the studio's usual fare -- i.e., sprawling epics "Fallout" and "The Elder Scrolls." Fans will be hoping for a glimpse at one of those, whatever it may be.
