We already reviewed the latest iteration in the longstanding 'Command & Conquer' series on the PC, so I'm not going to go too much into the gameplay itself — you can read here for a more detailed look.
However, the PS3 port of 'Red Alert 3' has been slapped with a nice little appendage to its title — Ultimate Edition — which is certainly mouth-watering if not altogether that much better than the normal purchase.
So for the purposes of this review, I'm going to mainly focus on two areas: how the game differs on the PS3 version, and what's so great about the 'Ultimate Edition'.
Let's start with what extras you get: five new multiplayer maps, behind the scenes videos and trailers, exclusive TV programming, tips from the development team, profiles and the official soundtrack.
Gameplay wise, the obvious question for any real-time strategy game on a console is how well the control system works. The answer is: remarkably well.
It's not as easy to use as that of 'Halo Wars' because EA tried to give you all the functions you would get on the PC (as opposed to 'Halo Wars's' decision to dumb things down) but uses the same basic principle, namely to have an option wheel that you can flick through with one of the analog sticks.
It will take some getting used to before you can select your build and combat options without losing too much time, but once you're there its fairly effective.
My single biggest complaint with the PC version was the simplistic gameplay graphics, and the PS3 version hasn't improved on that score. It still looks like you're fighting wars with PlayMobil figurines.
If you're not one to be side-tracked by such trivial drivel, however, then you'll enjoy 'Red Alert 3's' fun-fuelled gameplay. It has the same over-the-top B-movie cinematics and highly original combat units that has been a stalwart of the series to date.
The 'Ultimate Edition's' extras alone definitely warrants an increase in price. So the fact that you're getting these extras without having to pay a premium on the PS3 could clinch the deal for you if you haven't yet played it on any of the other platforms.
