SuperSport plans to broadcast this weekend’s test rugby match between South Africa and France in 360-degree virtual reality, adding a new dimension to sports entertainment in SA.
According to Multichoice’s in-house sports broadcaster, the live stream will be viewable on both Facebook and YouTube. It will be a full broadcast, including a build-up and post-match feed from Growthpoint King’s Park Stadium in Durban.
While the stream will be viewable on any device that supports either Facebook or YouTube, a truly immersive experience will only be possible with the use of a VR headset.
If SuperSport pulls the ground-breaking endeavor off, it should turn out to be the closest fans can get to being in the stadium without having to buy a ticket.
While the first broadcast will be free, it remains to be seen whether future 360-degree streams will be broadcasted on the channel’s own website.
“We hope this adds to the richness of the traditional broadcast and look forward to seeing the result,” says Gideon Khobane, SuperSport’s CEO.
