The Department of Basic Education has launched an investigation after it was hacked by an apparently pro-ISIS group called ‘Team System DZ’.
The attack happened on Wednesday evening, and the home page was temporarily filled with grim and graphic imagery of decapitated corpses.
Even more frighteningly, some of the images depict children. A message was left by the hackers:
"Hacked by Team System DZ. A message to the government, the American people and the rest of the world. Is this the humanity that you claim, or is life irrelevant to Muslims? Do not imagine that these actions against Muslims will pass you and we will forget what you did to the Arab and Muslim peoples all over the world. I love Islamic State."
The worrying message clearly suggests a pro-Islamic State agenda, making quite unclear why the DBE – or any South African entity - has been targeted.
The department has since distanced itself from the imagery, and is working with the State Information and Technology Agency to get to the bottom of the hack.
