Supersport has "no immediate plans” to launch a standalone sports streaming service, despite the recent success of DSTV Now.
Speaking to MyBroadband, the Multichoice subsidiary says that it’s keeping up to date with the latest trends. “SuperSport operates in a fast-moving industry,” it says. “The most successful content providers have the ability to offer customers content across all platforms.”
And while the sports channels have proven to be popular on DSTV Now, the company’s current streaming platform, there are “no immediate plans to launch” a sports-only option.
Currently, SuperSport is only available as part of the full DSTV package, but many have called for it to be offered on its own, as well.
According to MyBroadband, SuperSport cites South Africa’s slow broadband progress as a roadblock, as well as the high price of mobile data.
Recently, US sports broadcaster ESPN announced its intentions to launch a streaming platform, with a strong focus on American sports.
While it would be nice to have a similar service here at home, it seems unlikely to materialise any time soon.
