Cellular network Vodacom has reimbursed customers affected by an unusual billing issue on Monday.
According to reports, users experienced data depletion for no apparent reason on the day, and the network has since acknowledged and corrected the issue.
It says the issue was caused by a “configuration change” on its prepaid and top-up systems. Affected customers have been given a 500MB data bundle to use within three days.
“An error of this kind has never happened before and we’ve taken steps to ensure it never recurs,” says CEO Shameel Joosub. “We’d like to assure all our customers that this was simply an error caused during a configuration change and nothing more than that. We hope our customers will appreciate the gesture, and our apology.”
Earlier this week, irate and bemused South Africans took to Twitter to comment on the situation.
