Telkom is changing the cellular data game in South Africa by offering zero-rated streaming for FreeMe customers.
Known as ‘LIT’, the service is the next phase of Telkom’s ‘disruption’ of the local data market. According to MyBroadband, FreeMe 2GB customers will be able to stream music for free, while users with 5GB and up will also be able to stream video.
The zero-rated sites are as follows:
Google Play Music
Google Play Movies
There is a catch, however: video streaming will be limited to a resolution of 360p. Anything above that will consume the user’s data. “You can’t tell the difference on a small screen,” says Telkom’s Erna Korff.
MyBoradband adds that the service will be available from the 1st of September. “We staked our claim of being a leading mobile data operator when we launched,” says Telkom’s consumer and mobile CEO Attila Vitai. “We believe this is a game changer.”
