Instagram has suffered a major scare, with hackers possibly getting their hands on the email addresses and mobile numbers of several high-profile users.
In an alert sent out to verified users, the social network says that a vulnerability in its code allowed cybercriminals to gain access to some personal information.
“We recently discovered that one or more individuals obtained unlawful access to a number of users’ contact information by exploiting a bug in an Instagram API,” it says. “We encourage people to be vigilant about the security of their account and exercise caution if they encounter any suspicious activity, such as unrecognised incoming calls, texts, and emails.”
Thankfully for the company and the users affected, no passwords were obtained by the hackers, and the bug has since been fixed.
