Digital piracy is only becoming more and more of a problem for production companies, and there’s little they can do to stop the rot.
This season of Game of Thrones was illegally obtained more than a billion times, while it was only watched legally fewer than 40-million times.
According to MyBroadband, Netflix has tried something different in an attempt to curb piracy, creating a warning video inspired by its hit show, Narcos.
In the video, which has been broadcasted in France, characters tell viewers that they’ve seen them Googling ‘Narcos season 3’, and that if you want the show, you’ll have to pay the ‘Cali Cartel’.
And unlike France’s government, which issues internet abusers with three strikes before disconnecting them, the Cartel will show no mercy.
“There will be no please, no por favor, and no si’l vous plait,” the gangsters add. “There’s bullets for you, your family, and all the people you send to watch Narcos on those shitty websites full of pop-ups.”
Will this approach work? Not likely – but it’s a nice try.
