WhatsApp is following in Apple’s footsteps by adding its own (somewhat) special twist to the selection of emojis available to users.
WhatsApp has been using Apple’s selection for a while now, without its own custom emoticons.
All that is about to change, however. Emojipedia says that the instant messenger, owned by Facebook, is rolling out new and improved emojis that are prettier, but not entirely unique.
In fact, says the site, they’re “highly inspired” by Apple’s own characters. “At a glance these could be confused for Apple's own emojis,” it says. “It appears that the brief for this project may have been ‘take Apple's emojis, and change them enough so we can call them our own’”.
What’s more, adds Emojipedia, is that WhatsApp is rolling out all-new ‘fantasy’ emojis before Apple, including genies, zombies and fairies.
Will Apple have an issue with the similarities? Probably not, given that WhatsApp has been promoting Apple’s own set for ages.
