Nintendo has shown off more details surrounding its upcoming Wii U console and games at the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

The briefing saw no big surprises as well, with blockbuster franchises Zelda, Metroid and StarFox nowhere to be seen.

The company kicked off proceedings by showing an introduction video to the Wii U GamePad.

Design legend Shigeru Miyamoto demonstrated Pikmin 3, a new entry in the popular series which first landed on the GameCube in 2001.

Mario continued things with New Super Mario Brothers being revealed for the Wii U. Aside from the usual platforming action, the game also lets one player use the tablet controller to place blocks for the remote-toting players.

The company also showed off Scribblenauts Unlimited, the next iteration of the popular DS title and Wii Fit U.

Nintendo also announced a minigame compilation, called Nintendo Land, for launch day, featuring 12 different minigames.

"Start playing Nintendo Land and you'll understand the Wii U," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

A variety of third-party titles were also revealed for the console, including Mass Effect 3, Batman Arkham City, Rayman Legends, Lego City, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Tanks Tanks Tanks, Trine 2 and Darksiders 2.
