The first 3D-printed organ is expected to be completed by 2014.
US-based company Organovo said that advances in the field will mean that the first 3D-printed organ, a liver, will be completed by the end of 2014, Computer World reported.
The biggest hurdle facing 3D-printed organs right now is the vascular system, with Organovo claiming that they've overcome the issue to an extent.
Without a proper vascular system, the liver tissue will die relatively quickly, as it would be starved of oxygen and nutrients.
Once it's completed, the liver will not be used in patients, but for research only.
