The Road Traffic Management Corporation has been left red in the faced after its new traffic fines website was hijacked by an organisation aimed at exposing fraudulent traffic fines.
The website domain aarto.co.za has been registered by the Justice Project of South Africa and visitors to the site are being diverted to the website greedfines.co.za which ironically advises motorists about how to get off traffic fines legally and promotes the ban of speeding cameras.
AARTO is the new point demerit system being rolled out across the country as the CEO of the RTMC is under investigation for mismanagement.
The RTMC let the domain name for the country's new traffic point demerit system lapse and Howard Dembovsky from the Justice Project of South Africa pounced.
"The domain had become available for purchase. It is 100 percent legal," said Dembovsky.
The Justice Project's members met with representatives from the RTMC and AARTO on Tuesday and have agreed to stop diverting users from Wednesday.
