A software developer has identified an 'iPhone 3.1' in usage logs, sparking speculation that a new iPhone was on the way.

According to Apple Insider, the new reference means that significant changes are in the pipeline, as the first digit is only changed when many hardware changes are introduced.

This was evident in the iPhone 3GS, which carries the reference name 'iPhone 2.1' while the original iPhone was tagged with the reference name 'iPhone 1.1'.

The device also seems to follow Apple's standard development routine, with the final stages of testing being over the internet, Softpedia reported. The ID was said to have been spotted way back in March, with a few believing that there is still a long way to go before its release.

The app used, known as iBart, is a travel guide for the San Francisco area, according to Mac Rumors. It's also seen as the first time that the new reference was 'spotted' in public.
