Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy SIII smartphone in South Africa.

The Galaxy SIII features a quad-core processor, 4.8-inch HD touchscreen and 8-megapixel camera. Samsung has also included a number of new features, such as Smart Stay for keeping the screen lit and a voice assistant called S-Voice.

Despite the launch, the hotly anticipated phone, with a recommended retail price of R7999, was already available at Vodacom stores on the day of the international release (29 May 2012).

The handset has been a huge success so far in South Africa as well, with 50 000 preorders, said Deon Liebenberg, managing director for Samsung South Africa.

The Video Hub service was also launched for Samsung devices, with South Africa being one of seven countries to receive the storefront, the company confirmed. However, Samsung's Craige Fleischer has conceded that there isn't much content on the service for now.
