Google has revealed the latest version of its wildly popular Android mobile platform.

Android 4.1, called Jelly Bean, follows a trend of naming updates after desserts in alphabetical order, with Ice Cream Sandwich being the previous version.

One of the biggest changes to the platform is the updated notifications system.

"If you're late for a meeting or missed a call, you can email or call directly from notifications," read a post on the Android blog.

The company has also introduced updates based around voice functionality, with Voice Search and the Voice Typing tool receiving attention.

Voice Search allows users to pose queries to Google, while the Voice Typing update now works without the need for a data connection.

The company has also revealed its Google Now functionality, giving users "the right information at just the right time".

"It tells you today's weather before you start your day, how much traffic to expect before you leave for work, or your favourite team's score as they're playing. There's no digging required: cards appear at the moment you need them most.

Android Jelly Bean is set to roll out in mid-July, with the Nexus 7 tablet, Nexus S, Motorola Xoom and Galaxy Nexus set to receive it first.
