During Apple's iPhone event, the company wrongfully claimed that its iPhone 5 was the "thinnest smartphone in the world".

Huawei's Ascend P1 S could lay claim to that title, measuring in at 6.7mms, while Motorola's Droid RAZR, at 7.1mms, also trumps the iPhone 5, measuring 7.6mms.

Both handsets, released in 2011, run versions of Google's Android platform.

Additionally, the unreleased ZTE Athena measures 6.2mms, while another Chinese phone, the Oppo Finder, is 6.65mms thin, MyBroadband reported.

Apple's new smartphone features a larger, 4-inch touchscreen, faster A6 chip and revised eight-megapixel camera.

The iPhone 5 is set to ship to nine countries on 21 September, with Apple hoping to launch in 100 countries by December 2012.
