BLOODY SILLY SUGGESTIONS
"); document.write("These are stupid suggestions - I still have to upload the 12MB file, how can it help me to do it through youtube etc, I still have to post it?? The solution is for Telkom/Vodacom and Co. to stop strangling us with their slow bandwidth speeds and extortionist prices and to give us a proper internet service. Scream for better service DON'T look for ways to maximise the poor service we get now?. nuff ced"); document.write("
blatant advertising
"); document.write("There are many ways to send large files other than those mentioned. All this is is a blatant advertisement for that silly website.. Clive Crous"); document.write("
much easier
"); document.write("even skype could be used much easier aint it?. jp"); document.write("
suggestions
"); document.write("So please, enlighten us as to what else you can do if you can't email your friend a large file?

I know if you want to send media you could use a third party conversion tool to downsize it but the quality loss will be enormous.

And while you are right about telkom and and co. nuff ced, don't you think people have been complaining for years about how ###### the service is from telkom? At this moment in time there are only two options, get another ISP such as neotel(where available) or maximise poor service as you say. Again, enlighten us as to what other solutions there are instead of sitting back and trolling. . random oke"); document.write("
@ RANDOM OKE
"); document.write("I think the point I was trying to make was that sending a 12MB file to a friend (and cc to a bunch of other family members) or posting it on youtube etc ....... you still have to transmit the 12MB. So unless this is a file that needs saving for all time and for a lot of people to see, what's the point. I've been on slow farm lines where 5MB would take over an hour to download (if you didn't get dropped halfway) and right now I'm paying R1500pm for a capped 3gig/pm VSAT connection because there is no 3G in our area, so believe me I know about slow speeds and being ripped off by Telkom. I still think it's a bloody silly suggestion for the \"iAfrica (Cool)Tech Guy\" to recommend www.yousendit.com or posting to youtube as a good solution? The only solution will come when Hellkom stops ripping us all off (and I wasn't trolling, I don't think ;-). nuff ced"); document.write("
Besides the point
"); document.write("Slow lines is not the point - email size limitations is the reason for this article. A lot of email services limit the size of the files you can email (especially at work), regardless of bandwidth speeds. The point of this article is to show a way around these email size limitations, not bandwidth speeds. Grr"); document.write("
Its about email
"); document.write("thats the whole point, thanks grrr, and you paying R1500 for 3 gigs? LOL. random oke"); document.write("
The Point
"); document.write("@ Grr ...... if size limitation was the point of the article then the first paragraph is poorly written and doesn't clearly make that point.

@random oke ..... yup, R1500pm for 3gig is what the Telkom monopoly charges for a VSAT connection. What landlines we have are stolen regularly, there is no iBurst,3G or similar alternative in the area, so VSAT is the only option. You wonder why I'm frustrated? ;-). nuff ced"); document.write("
@ nuff ced
"); document.write("Why not use axxess at R69 a gig (shaped though)? too slow for you? I think we all want to be able to have superfast, super cheap internet but unfortunately, this is what we get. random oke"); document.write("
Clap yourself on the back?
"); document.write("\"Clap yourself on the back...\"

Who speaks like that? Isn't it 'Pat yourself on the back? Was this directly translated from Afrikaans?

PS: Some silly suggestions by the way. Seems like iAfrica has nothing to write anywore.. Peter Jones"); document.write("
@ nuff ced

Send large files

Solution
"); document.write("Whether you're uploading a file in a video format (WMV,AVI etc.) or a large zip it would be easier to use a ftp program to send it to an online location where family/friends can download and watch/open it from.

There are plenty of free FTP programs as well as free web-hosting companies about. 10 minutes of research will have you up and running.

Most FTP programs have an automatic resume feature which will continue uploading from the where the connection was broken. You can even pause the upload and resume it in a couple of hours or the next day.

Free hosting: http://www.webs.com/
Free FTP: http://filezilla-project.org/. interweb"); document.write("
@solution
"); document.write("Thanks for that, but just to elaborate a bit, yousendit.com is a FTP site.... Shoesies"); document.write("
@Shoesies
"); document.write("Yeah, however I like to be in full control when spending hours uploading files. When I was working in SA last year I regularly used FTP to send files up to 50mb to an Irish domain woth no trouble - and while using MTN 3G.

not enuff ced
"); document.write("I think that people arguing with nuff ced are exactly the kind of people that are helping huge corporations to exploit us. We, as South Africans seem to have a victim mentality. \"Ah there's nothing we can do about it so let's just bend over and take it...\" Why should we pay these ludicrous prices for pathetic services? It's insane. Once you start travelling and see the way things are in other countries you realise the unbelievable extent to which we are being exploited.

That being said I would also like to point out that there are other ways to send large files over the net: sites like mediafire and adrive are very good for that sort of thing. You upload your files to their server and then tell your friends where to find the files. Adrive acts as a hard drive on the internet (practically). 50 gigs for free is not to be scoffed at.

Cheers

non-victim. non-victim"); document.write("
"); document.write("Thanks for the support'non-victim'. This article is a bit like \"20 things you can do to stop the bleeding and ease the pain if illegally assaulted by the Police\"........ Rather use the iAfrica platform to stop Telkom's assault on us than provide bandaids or help us make do with such inferior service? At least make mention of it? I still think this article started off as an advert for yousendit.com but quickly morphed/spun into something else when it got attention. Re-read the first paragraph again .... I still don't buy it that \"email size limitations is the reason for this article\" ;-)

@random oke .... how would I get to use \"axxess at R69 a gig\"? Like many rural people (although only 10km from the capital of KZN, PMB)I can't get ADSL or 3G and am lucky most days to even make a call on our landlines. I would like (but don't demand) \"superfast, super cheap internet\" ... I wouldn't begrudge the R1500pm if it bought me about 10gig/pm at a reasonable speed BUT R500 per gig is robbery? Just my 2c worth ;-)
. nuff ced"); document.write("
er
"); document.write("I meant thats a bummer that you don't have proper lines, only saw your message after I posted my axxess-related message. However for those suggesting Adrive and mediafire, they do the exact same thing as yousendit and rapidshare.

Lol at the yousendit remark, so by that token the best of youtube feature is an ad for youtube?. random oke"); document.write("
Great software for sending large files

@ random oke
"); document.write("Well yes, the \"best of youtube feature\" is an ad for youtube but, to be fair to the \"(Cool)Tech Guy\", it would be impossible for him to discuss or recommend useful websites without seeming like an advert for those sites (much in the same way as a movie reviewer?)so perhaps it was a bit of a cheap shot at him to imply his sole motive was advertising, and for that I apologise to him ... I enjoy his column. My comments about making do with Telkom etc still stand ;-). nuff ced"); document.write("
