Computer memory usage:

Windows XP:

  1. On your desktop, right-click with your mouse on the "My Computer" icon and click on "Properties". The System Properties window appears.
  2. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
  3. Under the "Performance" heading, click on "Settings". A new window appears.
  4. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
  5. Under the "Memory usage" heading, choose one of these options:
    • "Programs" if you use your computer to work on; or
    • "System cache" if you use it as a server.
  6. Click "OK".
  7. Click on "OK" again.

Paging file:

Windows XP:

  1. On your desktop, right-click with your mouse on the "My Computer" icon and click on "Properties". The System Properties window appears.
  2. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
  3. Under the "Performance" heading, click on "Settings". A new window appears.
  4. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
  5. Under the "Virtual memory" heading, click on the "Change" button. A new window appears.
  6. Under "Drive [Volume Label]", click on the drive letter for which you want to change the paging file.
  7. Under the "Paging file size for selected drive", select the radio button next to the "Custom size" option and change the initial and maximum sizes. (If you're unsure about this step, rather keep the radio button next to "System managed size" selected.)
  8. Click on the "Set" button.
  9. Click on "OK".
  10. Click on "OK" again.
  11. Click "OK" a third time.

Windows Vista:

  1. On your desktop, right-click with your mouse on the "Computer" icon and click on "Properties". A new window appears.
  2. Click on the "Advanced system settings" link on the left. The System Properties window appears.
  3. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
  4. Under the "Performance" heading, click on "Settings". A new window appears.
  5. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
  6. Under the "Virtual memory" heading, click on the "Change" button. A new window appears.
  7. Deselect the box next to "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" if it is selected.
  8. Under "Drive [Volume Label]", click on the drive letter for which you want to change the paging file.
  9. Under the "Selected drive", select the radio button next to the "Custom size" option and change the initial and maximum sizes. (If you're unsure about this step, rather keep the radio button next to "System managed size" selected.)
  10. Click on the "Set" button.
  11. Click on "OK".
  12. Click on "OK" again.
  13. Click "OK" a third time.
