There is a general shift towards being able to do all your work on the internet, negating the need to install any software on your computer. We're not quite there yet, but here are some websites that will take you into the cloud.

If text document editing, viewing and sharing is your problem, then there are plenty of websites which will be able to help. Of course, the most prominent one is Google Docs, but there is another site I'm particularly fond of: Shutterborg.

Sporting a clean interface with three main options — "new document", "open from disk" and "open from web" — it's extremely simple to use. And, as with Google Docs, your work stays online, allowing you to edit or retrieve it from any computer with an internet connection.

Presentations are often prepared way in advance but in case last-minute gremlins get to you, there are quite a few other online options.

Zoho is one of them. It allows you to sign in using either a Yahoo, Google or Google Apps password. The site has many features, allowing you to make a slideshow that's indistinguishable from PowerPoint and OpenOffice versions — in fact, you can import those file formats too.

There are also a few spreadsheet-oriented websites — such as editgrid.com. This site offers an array of features, though you have to sign up at first. The site also allows you to export your spreadsheets into PDF, Excel, CSV and many other formats.

Need to edit pictures but you don't have a suitable program? Then check out picnik.com for an awesome site that puts many free programs to shame with its ease of use and amount of options. Simply click "upload a photo" and then you can begin editing. There's also the option of uploading your photo from Facebook, MySpace and other networks.

Of course, if you're just looking to back up your information and for some reason you don't have a DVD/CD writer, there are a few online options for this too.

One particular site that kept popping up during my search was idrive.com, which offers both a free and paid service. Two gigabytes of space is offered with the free account, which should be more than enough for your important documents, spreadsheets, pictures and presentations. And unlike other solutions, your data is retained for as long as you want.
